This concept design actually expands into a “V” shape to store extra books which judging by the image, looks a bit cumbersome…

The REK features an ingenious design that is both visually interesting and practical for those who accumulate a lot of books.
the REK expands and collapses like an accordion to eliminate negative space on the shelf. As you book collection grows, the shelves can be pulled apart in a configuration of your choosing. Great design. This is inspires me to learn how to read…

Just in time for Christmas shopping, London’s PICTURES ON WALLS has announced a new BANKSY print commemorating his Tesco mural in Shoreditch (now covered in protective plastic) is set to go on sale on December 6th. The signed and numbered silkscreen will be available—alongside a number of other prints we could care less about—via a lottery system whereby would-be buyers can purchase a lottery ticket for £1 GBP (up to 20 per person), with all proceeds going to Sight Savers, an international anti-blindness charity, that will ensure them a CHANCE to snag the actual print when it’s released. Unfortunately for international Banksy fans, tickets can only be purchased in person at POW. Winning consumers will be chosen randomly, and the first four names drawn get the print for free. Not a bad deal considering this thing might end up putting your kid through college someday (when people start buying art again)…

according to a yanko design review:
Over a million plastic water bottles end up in U.S. landfills everyday so if you really want to be green, you should be using some refillable vessel. Water is (for the most part) free, disposable plastic bottles aren’t so you end up saving money by using your own container. So what makes this $30 bottle different from the cheapo plastic ones?
Most refillable water bottles are made of Polycarbonate (PC), even though scientists have known for years that Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical used in the PC manufacturing process, leaches into whatever liquid goes inside. BPA is a known hormone-disruptor that’s been linked to birth defects. Mounting evidence suggests that even small quantities pose major health risks.
The team at RKS Design evaluated glass, acrylic, and many other substances. They eventually found a new material that featured the clarity and performance of polycarbonate without the dangers of BPA called Tritan.
Aside from proudly wearing its BPA FREE label, thee KOR ONE is designed to be ergonomic. All those soft curves make it easy to grab, hold, carry, and set. The bottom is cushioned by a rubber ring. The handle comfortably curves around your grip. The cap unsnaps with a push of a button and clicks tightly when you shut it. The spout is also curved and sized perfectly to assist the flow of water into your thirsty mouth.
Wait, that’s not all. Underneath that cap is a space for a KOR stone; an inspirational message you can swap out. Mine says “Better Me, Better World.” AIN’T THAT THE TRUTH! There are also a couple blanks in there for your own personal messages like, “JUST SAY NO!” Sorry, Nancy Reagan moment there.
What we liked:
Holds 750 ml of water. Drink a little over 2 of them to your daily requirement
Extremely durable plastic that’s lightweight. A lot lighter than you think despite its bulk
BPA FREE, no poisons leeching into my drinking water thank you
Comfy carrying handle
Rubber base is a nice touch, feels like quality when I set it down
Wide mouth for drinking
Dishwasher safe! Gotta love that
KOR stone concept is a great way to give yourself reminders before every sip

Unfortunately Detroit is a pretty sad place, but that doesn’t mean visiting the Motor City is without great attractions. The Detroit Institute of Art is currently showing In The Company of Artists a photographic exploration of the lives of famous and creative individuals. The photographs come direct from the Institute’s collection and were taken by (to name some) Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe and Arnold Newman. Subjects, as you might imagine, are equally creative and famous. A range of lenses affords the opportunity to delve into the core subject and thread the needle over the course of just past a century of intellectual activity.
Above is a portait of Diane Arbus taken by Gary Winogrand, just one example of In the Company of Artists. The exhibit is on view until February 15, 2009.

the ever-elusive phantom that is the underground art world’s “Damien Hirst,” namely BANKSY, has just released a silk-screened print of an image from his recent swing through New Orleans. Produced by UK print house PICTURES ON WALLS, the signed and numbered edition cashes out at a very hefty £450 GBP (approx. $670 USD), making us hope that in these economically dire times, the proceeds from this very politically-motivated image are being donated to a local New Orleans charity, although no information to confirm this has been released.

When the wood block lights up, all the design-heads go crazy (pop my collar, swing my mouse…). This award winning design (2002 Asahikawa design fair) is now available to the design masses. It looks like a solid block of wood, but when you turn on the clock, an LED readout magically appears on the surface (it’s actually an illusion utilizing a thin veneer front).
Available in two sizes, this is the “tall” version and measures 8.25″ x 3.5″ x 3.5″. Powered by an included AC adaptor.

Duck Young Kong presents the Lunar Baby Thermometer, a simple temperature checking device for the mother or father, aunt or uncle; whoever’s doing the placing of the hand on the head. Check the child’s temperature without uncomfortable placing of glass sticks in places of discontent.
Designed by Duck Young Kong:
The idea is based on a common and natural behavior of putting your hand on the forehead to measure internal heat of their body. Checking the temperature by scanning the forehead with this device is easier and faster, since it eliminates the need to insert an external tool while holding them in a still position. The intuitive shape of the device allows the user to easily understand how to hold and use the device. The organic and ergonomic shape provides a secure grasp in the users hand.
and the most important part:
After simply placing the device on the forehead, a beeping sound followed by a flashing LED alerts the user when it is done. In addition, the user can clearly see the temperature on the LCD screen, while holding the device to their baby [or sick little kid].
Why wasn’t this designed before just now?

Few have been as fortunate and furious on the collaboration front as German sneaker boutique Solebox. Teaming up with many of the industry’s heavyweights, one of their greatest collaborative projects resulted in the Purple Devil pack with New Balance which has still garnered much talk despite releasing a few years ago. And while Solebox has worked together with many other footwear labels, there seems to be an inherent softspot for New Balance which can be seen between the two’s solid track record. For the whole of the lifestyle footwear world, no particular brand still maintains such a strong focus and dedication to quality of production as the classic NB, and for those even just a little bit versed in sneaker culture, many will immediately associate the word “Flimby” with top of the line execution. While New Balance doesn’t exactly use Flimby as marketing fooder, the factory name in itself is very much a subdued marketing point. But then again New Balance’s results speak for themselves. The shoe will be released on November 22nd
